we all walk in circles

What defines straight?

Isn’t straight

a measurement consensus?

If straight is a left or right issue,

does straight also have

an up and down plain issue?

Isn’t straight

a feedback ritual.

It is a conjecture of acceptance.

If you go to the molecular

or mega level

how does straight measure?

The planet itself evidences

the sacred cut most everywhere

none of which is very straight.

Is straight the fabric of myopic

human self-consciousness?

We have lots of right angle stuff

in our world,

enough to justify our belief

in straight as real and impressive

but scale up or scale down

and straight wanders around

looking for useful habitats.

But hey, the horizon line

on an ocean is straight.

Well, at sea level,

it appears that way

but climb up a mountain

say like Mauna Kea in Hawaii

and look out over the Pacific

and you can see it is curved

beyond reason.

So much so that the ocean

should be lapping up the sides

of somewhere out of frame!

Okay try the laser beam of light.

That is really straight, yes?

Well subjectively,

with laser in hand,

you would think in a dark room,

this is as straight

as straight can get.

But as you go

down that straight line beam

it gets fatter and it dissolves.

It is measurably straight

but by what means?

It is convention

to have something be straight.

It is a summary

to say something is straight.

Straight is more about

the method of perception,

in the eyes of the beholder,

agreement for agreement’s sake.

Straightness is essentially

a cultural construct,

an anomaly of precision

in a self-conscious world.

Straight is really a fashion

in a scale recognition domain.

To walk in a straight line

when every step is a tangent

on either side of that line

is a choice of selective measurement,

a summation of truncations.

Even on a balance beam,

walking in a straight line,

however limited the options

will technically produce segments

to the right and to the left.

Look, in a crazy wisdom way,

possibly every sentence

without punctuation

would be a run on.

Attention to order may only be

self-consciousness imposing its

remembrances upon us.

If someone started extremely young

and made it their life purpose

to be able to sneeze

with their eyes open,

eventually I am sure

progress would be made

and then their children

proceeded on the same course

of manifestation

and then their children,

eventually someone would stand up

and be capable of sneezing

with their eyes wide open.

So to would it be possible

for a human to walk

in a straight line

if given the inspiration

and the zeal and the dedication

assuming we had a truly flat planet

to be walking upon

in daily practice

and a stated length

besides a lifetime

to measure those results.

Look, does hair grow evenly

out of our scalps?

Gees, the sacred cut rules

but we are in denial!

We even claim practical math rules

when theoretical math

is more prophetic,

poetic and profound.
